Lumps of Christmas Coal

Easy Oreo + Marshmallow Christmas Treats | Lumps of Coal | by maritzagarcia.website

A few years ago I made a few batches of these tasty Lumps of Coal cookies and handed them out at the office, to my kids, friends, extended family members and so on. They were well liked by many, including myself. This time around I tweaked the recipe and found the old and new recipe are both tasty, yet different none-the-less. What I changed this time around was removing all the filling from the Oreo cookies prior to crushing them to get a darker coal-like look [see original post here] and to also make them less sweet (sugary).

TO GET STARTED YOU WILL NEED

1. 14.3 oz Oreo Cookies

2. 3 TBSP Unsalted Butter

3. 10 oz Mini Marshmallows

4. Rolling pin + Storage gallon size bag to crush Oreo cookies

5. Non-Stick Saucepan

6. Can of Cooking Spray

NOTE: If you’re making lumps of coal treats for the first time. This mixture does get really sticky -be prepared. Tip to remember. Spray your spatula and palms of hands to help make the process less messy.

INGREDIENTS

3 Tablespoons Butter

4 Cups Miniature Marshmallows (1 package 10 oz)

1 Bag of Oreo Cookies

Cooking Spray

INSTRUCTIONS

Step One:

Let’s start with the Oreo cookies. Remove all filling if you prefer a less sweeter + darker lump of coal treat or leave filling in for a sweeter + dusty-like lump of coal treat. Or you can make a batch of half and half? Once you decide which one makes the prefect Christmas coal treat, place Oreo cookies into a gallon size storage bag and gently break cookies into small pieces. Set aside.

Step Two:

Place 3 tablespoons butter into non-stick saucepan, melt butter over medium heat on stove top, add marshmallows. Stir until marshmallows melt and slightly bubble, then turn off heat.

Step Three:

Next add your crushed Oreo cookies into butter + marshmallow mixture. Mix all three ingredients using an oil sprayed spatula until Oreo cookies are well coated. Let cool before attempting to shape mixture into lumps of coal. Otherwise risk hot-glue like burns on your fingertips. Speaks from experience. ‘o’

Step Four:

Once mixture has cooled enough for you to tolerate, add a bit of cooking spray to clean palms of hands and quickly work mixture into small misshaped lumps of coal.

Step Five:

Place lumps of coal 1/2 inch apart from each other on wax paper or a cookie cooling rack to completely cool before storing in an air tight container or baggies. Otherwise they cluster together if not allowed enough cooling time prior to storing. -F I N.
